Through the herbal planting programme run by Rideekanda Forest Monastery, we hope to conserve the valuable and increasingly rare medicinal plants that grow in Sri Lanka, and so protect species that are disappearing. In the same way, by planting the trees and herbs needed to prepare paṇḍu dye for robes, what is required for robe-making can be found easily within the monastery itself.

This planting programme also matters for passing a knowledge of medicinal plants to the coming generation, and for making those plants easy to find whenever they are needed.

Choose your plant
Pick from the planting list below — or from the balance medicinal flora reference. Search by Sinhala, English or scientific name.

Pledge it in your name
Leave your name so we know the plant is coming and don't duplicate it. The plant is then held in your name.

Bring it and plant it
Come to the monastery, choose your spot with the saṅgha, and put it in the ground yourself.

Come back to this page, find your plant in the list and press Upload photo on it. Once the monastery approves the picture, it joins the record below — and your pledge is complete.

What has been planted.

Each photograph was sent by the person who carried the plant up and put it in the earth.

The first plants are on their way. This record fills as they go into the ground.
